Deborah Bishop, CHt
Hello and Welcome!
I want to personally welcome you to my blog. Thank you for finding this site and for taking the time to read my life story (abridged version). Please visit often and feel free to invite your friends. The more, the merrier, as “they” say.
My mission is to make your life better by helping you solve your problems. If you’re in pain, emotionally or physically, or if you just want to change some aspect of your life, then you’ve come to the right place. I want to spare you the pain and suffering I’ve endured over the years. If I can do that, then my time on this planet will not have been in vain.
Who is Deborah Bishop?
For more years than I care to admit, I really didn’t know. Which persona was the “real” me? Daughter? Wife? Mother? Friend? Employee? As it turned out, none of those titles defined me. The trick was to separate myself from every person in my life, and find out who was left standing. Who was that human being? Unfortunately, I felt that I was a nobody without my relationships and my career. I felt invisible. I had melded into those roles and, in the process, lost myself.
When I say that self-hypnosis saved my life, I am not exaggerating. Let me provide you with some background.
The Early Years
As a child, I longed to become a movie star. I would gaze at the glamorous and romantic actresses of “old Hollywood,” and knew that I belonged in that very unique world. At the age of nine, I procured an agent for myself and auditioned for several parts on television shows. But, my parents did not support my ambition. So, being totally dependent on them for transportation, I had to let go of that dream.
What did I learn about myself from this experience?
First, if I really want something, I would never again let anyone or anything stand in my way of attaining it. Second, it’s okay to dream, but don’t use the “dream” as an escape, use it as motivation. Dream big, but be realistic, or you’ll set yourself up for heartache (as I did). And, finally, don’t depend on other people for your happiness. The magic key to fulfillment lies within your own soul.
I was an introspective and lonely child. My best friend was my diary. I poured my heart out into that little book and found that the mere act of “writing” eased my angst considerably. This was a “safe” way to express my thoughts, emotions, fears, and insecurities. This friend never let me down because “it” was my alter ego.
My “neurotic” tendencies increased as I entered the terrifying teen years. I was painfully shy and lived in dread of public speaking, and any kind of confrontation. I developed colitis, or as they called it then, “nervous stomach,” and avoided social situations whenever possible.
By the time I entered college, I was experiencing full-blown panic attacks. With heart-pounding, hands trembling, and nausea sweeping over me, I always sat in the back row, aisle seat, with a can of soda pop (my security blanket). I was prepared to escape quickly should my anxiety overwhelm me.
I knew that if I continued to have these “attacks,” I would never graduate, and I was not about to let that happen. I was determined to make this dream a reality. I knew if I had the strength, willpower, and self-discipline to get a college degree, my feelings of low self-esteem would disappear forever.
Help Yourself!
Always a voracious reader, I plunged into the wonderful world of self-help books: “I’m OK, You’re OK,” “The Cinderella Complex,” “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” and “The Relaxation Response,” were only a few of the books I scrutinized. When I discovered a little book called, “Hypnosis for Change,” I thought it would be good for a few laughs, so I purchased it. I, like so many other people, had many misconceptions about hypnosis. Nevertheless, I thought it a subject worth exploring.
The Hollywood version of hypnosis was a movie called, “Svengali.” This was about an evil madman who controlled the beautiful young heroine. The stage hypnotists I’d seen had made grown people act like chickens in a barnyard. This hocus-pocus could not be taken seriously, could it?
The more I read, the more fascinated I became with hypnosis. My minor in college was abnormal psychology, a subject I found immensely interesting. It amazed me that scientists in the 20th century knew so little about how the brain functioned. I wondered how the minds of serial killers worked, and what caused people to split into multiple personalities. The brain had to be the most mysterious and wonderful of all our organs.
Take Charge!
The time had come to be proactive, so I made an appointment with a hypnotherapist. I was scared and excited at the same time. Would I lose control? Would he tell me to rob a bank?
Would I be turned into a goat? All these thoughts meandered around my mind until the therapist walked into the room. He was a small man, soft-spoken, with the kindest blue eyes.
I told him I was determined to get through college, but my anxieties and fears were holding me hostage. He assured me that he could not only help me, but he would show me how to help myself.
The session was uneventful. I was sure that I had not been hypnotized. I felt normal. I heard and remembered everything he’d said. I was the exact same person that walked into his office. Nothing had changed.
Painful Admission:)
I was wrong.
Everything had changed. Not only did I learn the source of my insecurities, but I learned the one thing that would change my life forever; self-hypnosis.
From that day on, I began a journey of self-empowerment. I no longer allowed my negative thoughts to terrorize me. Before school each day, I used self-hypnosis to relax. I consciously controlled my thoughts and feelings. When we are completely relaxed, we cannot also experience anxiety. These feelings are polar opposites and cannot exist at the same time.
While under hypnosis, I used these daily affirmations: I am free of stress and anxiety. I am healthy and strong. I deserve success and love. I am worthy of happiness and fulfillment. I am calm and in total control of my mind and my body.
I graduated from college, and spent many years in the corporate world as a writer and editor. In my spare time, I wrote articles on holistic health, alternative health options, and the body/mind connection. My fascination with the inner workings of the brain never waned. Although I loved writing, I felt that something was missing from my life. I met people throughout the world who suffered from the same depression, anxiety, and phobias that had plagued me for so many years. I extolled the benefits of self-hypnosis to them, but I wanted to do more.
I enrolled in the American Institute of Hypnotherapy and became a certified hypnotherapist. I learned many advanced techniques, such as hypnosis for pain management, anesthesia, and childbirth. The determination I had as a nine-year old was still a part of my nature. I decided to leave my “safe” work environment and venture out into private practice. This was my true calling.
As a clinician, I have helped hundreds of people conquer smoking and poor eating habits, addictions, fears and phobias, panic attacks, insomnia, confidence and sexual issues, and stress-related problems. I used regressive hypnosis and, in some cases, past-life regression, to determine the root causes of their problems.
It’s an extraordinary feeling to cure someone of harmful behavior. It’s even more gratifying to teach people how to help themselves. Armed with the tool of self-hypnosis, a person can face trauma, grief, tragedy, abuse, addiction, or any other number of adverse conditions, with inner strength and total control.
With self-hypnosis, you have the power to erase the past, and recreate a blissful childhood, should you so desire. You can relax yourself instantly, even in the most stressful of situations. You can minimize or eliminate pain. You can improve your memory, your concentration, and your motivation. The benefits of hypnosis and self-hypnosis are innumerable. Let your imagination guide, but not limit, you.
No longer is hypnosis thought to be an occult practice or quackery. There is hard, scientific evidence that proves how the brain alters during hypnosis, and that with a properly worded post-hypnotic suggestion, almost anything is possible.
I am living proof of that statement. I bring you this site not as an academic who has read a few books and taken a weekend course, but rather as someone who has experienced, first-hand, stress, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and low self-esteem. I am not a distant counselor, but someone who has walked in your shoes and spent time in your mind. If hypnosis can help someone like me, then it most certainly can help you. All it takes is determination and motivation to improve your life. If someone tells you to change, hypnosis will not work. The desire for positive change must come from deep within you.
