Scientific surveys prove, beyond a doubt, the connection between anxiety and stress and their effect on a multitude of physical and emotional disorders. A headline in a 1983 issue of Time Magazine described stress as “The Epidemic of the Eighties.” The journalist also said that stress is a leading health issue.  Without question,  our world has become increasingly more complex and stressful over the past 25 years.

Several surveys show that almost everybody is under the impression of being subject to a lot of stress. Authorities in the field estimate that 75 – 90 percent of all visits to PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) are related to stress.

Most people say that their job is the main cause of their stress. Stress levels have also soared in children and the elderly population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to drug and alcohol abuse; the wearing away of family and religious values and ties; increased crime rates; threats to personal security; and last but not least social isolation and loneliness.

Stress contributes to problems such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. This is due to the augmented sympathetic nervous system activity along with a flood of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress is corollary of impaired immune system resistance. Stress can contribute to anxiety, depression, and its various effects on the body’s organs.

The following definition for “stress” can be found in the American Heritage Dictionary: “To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain”

The same dictionary defines “tension” as follows: “Mental, emotional, or nervous strain”

It defines “anxiety” as follows: “A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties”

And the word “depression” is defined as follows: “The condition of feeling sad or despondent”

“Clinical depression” is defined as follows: “A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.”

One thing is for sure, our thoughts are the primary source of our experience of stress, anxiety and depression. To put it into different words, what we think about, and our attitudes and the way we view our experiences dictate our feelings. That way, if we can manage to alter our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, then we can release our stress, anxiety, and depression and replace them with a better state of being.

People have always tried to find methods for eliminating stress. With the pharmaceutical industry there seems to be a drug for everything. And to that end the industry has developed a large line of tranquilizers from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to utilize these pills for relief, please make sure that you are aware of the side-effects by reading the fine print, which often include addiction and dependency. Indeed these sorts of drugs try to cure the symptoms, but not the cause. So as soon as one stops ingesting them, the symptoms can return.

A better way of eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to try to cure its actual cause, which as I wrote before, is usually our thought processes. There is the good news. Hypnosis is all about relaxation. The AMA recognized hypnosis in 1958 as an effective way to cure stress and stress related symptoms. However unlike anxiolytics, there are completely no bad side effects.

Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness. It is the daydream like temporary psychological state which we experience as we’re about to fall asleep at night. And we experience it once again when we awaken again. There are several different ways that we can guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD’s.

Once in the hypnotic state, we can communicate with our unconscious mind, which is the seat of our emotions. And one can more easily acknowledge new ideas and points of view which will help us to get rid of anxiety, or even avoid it in the first place.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), which is a new kind of hypnotherapy, has many great methods for dissipating stress. Maybe the technique that works best is called the “swish” pattern – or the “flash” pattern. After using the “swish” pattern, your unconscious will automatically use negative, stress producing mental images, to create tranquilizing mental images. Put differently, your stressors will automatically cause relaxation!

TO SUM THINGS UP Our thoughts can prompt depression, anxiety and tension. So by changing our attitude and point of view towards our situation and what we’ve been through, we can get rid of these feelings at the root. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that we can use to help us change our attitude and point of view to easily get rid of the main cause of our negative feelings.

  2. People, particularly teens tend to communicate more via facebook or text messages. Technology is dehumanizing people. On top of that there is the culture of cruelty; teens can have a tendency to be meaner to their peers. No wonder teens feel and are more depressed. People do not care for each other as much as they used to.
