You’re sitting in a crowded theater. Suddenly, the room starts to spin, your heart pounds so hard you’re sure the person next to you can feel the vibration. I experienced panic attacks throughout my teenage years and into my early 20′s. The fear of having a panic attack created social anxiety. If I could avoid social situations, I could hide my horrible secret. But, I was a student and had to attend classes. There were certain school functions I couldn’t miss. I tried to “act” normal in front of my friends. But I couldn’t tell anyone about my fear and anxiety. Not my parents, not my friends. How could they understand the nightmare that had become my life? I didn’t want them to see me as a “freak” so I kept my little secret hidden. But my life spiraled out of control, and I had to do something drastic. Drop out of school? Not a possibility. See a counselor? Too embarrassing. Commit suicide? Perhaps.
But I didn’t do any of those things. I chose life over death and sought help from a hypnotherapist. He sent me home with a self-hypnosis tape after the first session. I listened to it several times a day and learned how to breathe correctly, how to engage my imagination, how to still the negative messages in my head.
Once I mastered the skill of self-hypnosis, I was able to relax instantly. I felt as if I had been given a second chance at life. An opportunity to live a life unrestrained by fears and phobias. It became my mission to help others find the freedom I had found in such a short time.
Panic Attack Symptoms
A person undergoing a panic attacks feels as if he is under siege. He feels his life is in jeopardy and that something horrible is about to happen. These terrifying emotions can arise suddenly and without warning. The symptoms can last for hours, escalating to an unbearable pitch. The emotional components are made worse by the physical symptoms,such as heart pounding out of control, sweating and dizziness, nausea, weakness, shaking, numbness, tingling, and an inability to stand up.
It is critically important to be proactive in your own life. Stop panic attacks before they develop into a paralyzing psychological disorder. Once you are unable to function in your daily life, your only option will be medical treatment; medications and, possibly, hospitalization.
